After this odd of a Football season as any, it seems we’ll end with some firings for “non production” and “not achieving the same goals”. But we will get to that, with the football season ending, we are at the playoffs, yes the play offs. Now my #1 time did not make it, but that is fine. Lets take a look at the play offs.
In the NFC the Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers have clinched the number one and two spots. In the AFC the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots have clinched the number one and two spots. But that is not all folks, this is where it gets interesting, we have the wildcards and numbers three and four. In NFC we have San Francisco 49ers (w/5) vs the Green Bay Packers(4) next weekend to see who continues and the New Orleans Saints (w/6) vs Philadelphia Eagles (3). Move it over to the AFC we have the Kansas City Chiefs (w/5) vs the Indianapolis Colts (4) and the San Diego Chargers (w/5) vs the Cincinnati Bengals (3).
So it is definitely not a certain who will make it through, every teams has played tough, but I would like to see the Packers continue and actually the Kansas City Chiefs. Packers, because I am a Green Bay fan, but also they had to play a few weeks without Aaron Rodgers, and it would definitely be a good story for the season to end it with the Super Bowl. Kansas City, because they have had a great season and I can’t say I remember the last time they were in the Super Bowl.
Firings, firings, firings oh my! All around the league Coaches were Fired, Minnesota fires Frazier, Detroit fires Schwartz, Cleveland fires Chudzinski, Washington fires Shanahan, and Tampa Bay fires Schiano. All teams did the typical, ‘we didn’t achieve the same goals’ and ‘wish * the best’. But lets be realistic, all except Washington and Tampa didn’t have horrible seasons. They just felt they could do better. This is like a guy being dumped by a hot girl because they think they can do better. At that, with Washington, they fired Shanahan, that coach has a legacy.
With Tampa, I can say I kind of understand it. Schiano was 11/21 in the time as a head coach. I am a Tampa fan, and I will admit this season was rough. They had some high spots, some ridiculous moves (Freeman), but all in all a soap opera of a season more than anything else. Schiano did fix the defense, I will give him credit for that, but the offense was underperforming for the most part. It was very 2 dimensional, most cases you could predict the play, and besides some crazy plays out of no where, it was very milktoast. (crazy play like the flea flicker from Sunday). Glennon in my opinion performed fairly well, the line does need some work to give him some time, but overall in my opinion impressive. It would be interesting to see where they take next season and who they pick for the head coach, but that particular head coach should leave the defensive coordinator in his spot, he has turned things around. Maybe find a head coach that has NFL experience and could make the offense a performing one? Also to note, Tampa Bay fired Mark Dominik as General Manager.
Now with Tampa, I wouldn’t place all the blame on Schiano. Tampa has something that I do not think anyone else is really paying attention to. Within the last decade, besides the Super Bowl and the 2006 Season when Griese led Tampa to a 5-0 start, Tampa has not been performing well. In that time frame, the Buccaneers had Jon Gruden, Raheem Morris, and Greg Schiano all as head coaches. 3 Coaches, bad seasons, and everyone blames the current head coach. But could it be someone else? Yes. I think the Glazers are not putting all they should into the Buccaneers, and I think the other fans see it in front of their eyes, but miss it. I can’t tell you the last time I saw someone excited for the team, besides they guys that cheered for them when Trent Dilfer was the starting Quarterback (like my self). The Glazers want a high return on Tampa with little investment (it feels like). Put some more into it, get a good head coach, one with the track record. I will say, they did spend some money on Vincent Jackson, Darrelle Revis, and Dashon Goldson. But they need to invest in a head coach and Quarterback. Yes, Glennon played well, but we need a veteran on the sideline or starting showing Glennon what he needs to learn. Tampa has a poor record of recent in bringing up a rookie Quarterback, Simms, Gradkowski, and Freeman have all proved that.
