Is the new NFL rules driving away fans?
Football has been America’s sport for a number of years now, whether we like to admit it, they are basically battling it out with Baseball and the MLB. When I say Football, I mean the sport with the egg shaped ball, not Soccer. I know other countries refer to Soccer as Football, but the way I was brought up I don’t see that.
Any case, the NFL has been instilling rules for a number of years to make the game “safer”. Which I can somewhat understand, they got slapped with a lawsuit, which they want to avoid have happen again, and they need to protect their investment. But as a fan, this does not sit well with me, I watch Football for the hard hits, the violence, and competitiveness. Don’t get me wrong, the sport is still competitive, but it doesn’t feel the same. I am not asking for them to have a helmet wearing UFC, but the old violence I have came to remember and love.
The lack of this has caused me to wonder to find a sport I can follow that appreciates my love for it and be something I can appreciate as I did football. I will admit I find it strange that NCAA Football is a lot more violent than their professional peers. I see myself skip around between MMA, Hockey, and even basketball. I will admit, basketball is difficult to get behind, the scores are ridiculous (105-80, Really?), MMA is just fighting, and well I am starting to like Hockey.
Maybe another football league that can really compete with the NFL needs to be created, but we all have seen what happened to the USFL, UFL, and XFL; all cut short rather quickly. I would just like the NFL to come back to what it use to be. The violent sport I grew up to love.
