It has been reported on ign that 2K has decided to not renew the MLB license, ultimately no more MLB2K games. What does this mean? Well in the last 7 (almost 8) years, 2K and SEN have been the only company making Baseball games. This came after EA secured the official NFL license. This now leaves SEN (Sony Entertainment Network) the sole game published for MLB currently.
This has came as somewhat a surprise, as the 2K series has sold well. Though, previously 2K stated the MLB2K12 would be the last installment. Even with that said, 2K ended up releasing MLB2K13. SEN makes MLB The Show, which has been heavily praised for it’s graphic and “real feel” to the game. With that said, it is a PlayStation exclusive. So, owners of Xbox and Nintendo would not be able to play that game. We all know how the third party support for the Wii U is going, so if EA decides to jump in, Nintendo still will not receive it until EA’s support to Nintendo is returned, if it is.
I have stated in the past that I feel that EA should continue to support Nintendo by third party, Nintendo has shown over the years it is resilient. But we will see what happens.
If EA does jump back into making MLB games, it would have just about every sport under it’s umbrella. Not including NBA, due to lack of sales and poor ratings, EA has shut the doors on NBA live again.
Next baseball season will have an interesting start to see who will pick up the MLB license and run with it.
